The Diaperbag family.

We are the Diaperbag family. There are Jordan, Evan and Dylan (also known as Muffin) and they are fondly known as JED. We are their parents. Ondine and Packrat.

This is JED

Always playing or planning and plotting to take over the world. Always up to shenanigans.

This is Jordan, our first born

Actually she's part of a twin set. She was known as Twin 1 in-utero. She loves to draw what she dreams, dances what she draws.

This is Evan, reluctantly the younger twin

He's Twin 2 by two minutes because it took the doctor that long to find him. We don't think he'll ever forgive the doctor!

This is our youngest, Dylan (also known as Muffin)

He fancies himself the Lion King. His favourite activities are to climb, jump, pounce and roar at the world. The world is his Pride Rock.

Grooming a young lady

National Day celebrations in school has always been the annual rummage through the drawer for something red and something white to wear.

Tangentially, we've come to the conclusion that Jordan's school is a very conservative and 'proper' mission girls school. Other mission girls schools allow their younger girls especially, to go to school in PE attire and spend the rest of the day in the same gear till dismissal on PE days. I had naturally assumed that Jordan would be allowed to do the same, only that she isn't. She is expected to change back into her uniform because 'proper' girls don't spend the day in PE clothes.

So it came as no surprise that she was given a long list of guidelines to follow for her National Day attire. And that drove me slightly batty.

1. No spaghetti straps.
2. No singlets (though when she told me, it came across as nothing sleeveless)
3. It had to be RED or WHITE with no other colour prints.
4. Only stripe and dot derivatives were allowed.
5. Skirts/ shorts and dresses had to reach the knees.
6. If they didn't, leggings had to be worn. Leggings had to be white.
7. Shoes could not have heels or wheels. No slippers either.

As Jordan rattled off the list, I pictured her in something resembling and red and white burqa which I was very certain, her Christian conservative school, would not be able to find funny and I would very quickly get called into the principal's office for.

White and red were bad enough. The white shorts we ended up pulling out were too short. The leggings I paired with it had pale grey stripes on it. Same response to the possible skirt options. The white tops we had were all sleeveless and Jordan vetoed it.

Eventually, the option was to go nekkid or in uniform and while she was happy to go in uniform, I was determined get it right and if possible, use it as a statement of how ridiculous I found some of the guidelines to be.

So this was the eventual ensemble that we put together.

When she pointed out that her top was still sleeveless, I pointed out that the material on the end of the skirt more than made up for it. She also pointed out that her skirt was too long and it would be difficult to go to the washroom if it were wet.

I told her we couldn't always win and she just had to hike up her skirt like any other 7 year old would do. And that way, NO ONE could query her length of skirt.

The little girl who HAD to do it as the rules stipulated was having a lot of cognitive dissonance from a mother who insisted on showing her that there was middle ground.

Incidentally, I had also known that the sleeveless top wasn't going to get her into trouble because the aforementioned rules were Jordan's interpretation of it and not really what the teacher meant.

I think she and her school deserve each other.

I shall also enjoy and treasure these days where she loves the long swishy skirts and where "You mean you're going to go out wearing that?" is not about a battle of how short and revealing her clothes are but how hot she might be.

Monday Morning Madness (A Giveaway): Slumber Party

If I left it up to the children, there would only be one out of the three who would willingly put on pyjamas for bed. And that would be Evan, whom we occasionally and fondly refer to as the little China-man because he would pull his pants all the way up to his belly and waddle around, just to make us laugh.

The other two? Muffin hated anything long sleeved because he got hot. Jordan would sleep in shorts if we gave her the go ahead. Unfortunately, the two would refuse any sort of warm night wear were also the two that would kick off any sort of blanket we used to shield them when the night became chilly. I have occasionally looked at Jordan, one leg hiked in her sleep as if she were in the middle of a running stride and recalled how I used to sleep in shorts as short as hers. Unfortunately, age and bones that can tell the weather have caught up with me and shorts are no longer a good idea. Having the benefit of hindsight, I try not to let the two renegades get away with it.

I chanced upon the solution with these pyjamas we got from Jordan's Godma for Christmas one year. They were long sleeved, long pant and cuffed so they didn't drag onto the ground or loosen and made from such soft material that if bedsheets were made out of it, I would.never.get.out.of.bed. They didn't misshapen with washing and Jordan's got passed down to Muffin even though they were pink and had hearts on them. And even with the pink hearts, Muffin did not battle wearing them at all. The only problem was that they were getting very threadbare and we needed some new ones.

And almost as if she read my mind, the nice lady behind MDBambini asked if I wanted to try the cute pj sets that she brought in. She had brought them in because she had two little girls herself and was always on the constant look out for nice things for them. That slowly grew into a little business where she was bringing in nice things that other mommies wanted for their little ones! I took a look at the album she sent me and decided that I wanted every single set of them. But since we do try to practice "want not, waste not" in our household, I got JED to pick out the ones they might want, warning them that it was still dependent on whether MDBambini had sizes in the designs they wanted.

It wasn't much of a surprise that the boys zero-ed in on the extremely festive red Thomas the Tank ones. I was just surprised that Evan didn't protest that his pesky little brother picked the same one that he did. In fact, I think he was quite chuffed that his little brother picked the same design as he did.

It was also not much of a surprise that Jordan picked the pink Princess Ballerina one since those were the two identities she fancied for herself. In my mind, I was picking my battles and if that was what it was going to take to get her to wear some longs to bed, so be it.

Before I replied to MDBambini, I made all three promise that if I was going to request those pjs for her, they had better wear them. Solemnly they did and Evan bugged me, like a broken record about when they were going to arrive, until they finally did. It took all of me and some ominous warnings that involved itchy and scratchy skin, to stop them from wearing it right out of the packaging.

It was everything I wanted in pjs. Soft, well made and well fitting. But what did it for me, especially for Muffin, was the the pj pants were stitched in such a way that it had space allowance for his diaper, giving him an extremely cute looking bum as he waddled around proudly showing off his new clothes (It was a pity he wouldn't let me photograph his bum!)

And if you asked me, the fact that Jordan wanted to wear the pj top to church the next morning was the best testament of how much she liked these pjs. Of course, we didn't let her and had to explain that no matter how pretty her pjs were, she was not to wear them to out of the house.

Anyway, to celebrate the fact that the JED kids are finally going to sleep dressed decently warm, especially since the rains have begun, I've arranged with MDBambini to give away TWO sets of Long Sleeved Pyjamas to the two deserving little ones of Diaperbag/ JED readers (worth $11 each). There are 25 different designs to choose from and I truly did want all 25 sets (1 for each night of the month and we repeat the top 5 or 6 favourites!)  To enter, simply
