Thumbsucking

One of the developmental milestones in an infant's life is discovering his extremeties and developing the coordination to move those extremeties where he wants them to go. My two children have discovered their fingers and have also consistently discovered their ability to stick them into their mouths. Occasionally they miss and it ends up poking their eyes or into their little noses.

I know there are people who are fervently against the putting of fingers into their mouths but when there are two of them, one, it's hard to police and two, WHATEVER shuts them up, especially when the alternative is that they drink milk non-stop and end up regurgitating it on all the adults around. Occasionally the pacifier works (I also know there're lots of people who disapprove of that too but once again, I have TWO children so ordinary rules and disapproval do not apply) but the pacifier isn't always readily available so fingers do pretty well. Learning to adapt from young, one life lesson down, a gazillion to go.

Anyway, I couldn't resist this morning and video-ed their extremely self-involved episodes of thumbsucking. They looked so content and chilled out. My only gripe is that the videos are unclear. But I'll slowly figure that one out.

Evan contemplating lunch while chomping on all his fingers.

Jordan, enjoying the fleshy part of her palm and some thumb occasionally.

  1. Your babies are so cute! It makes me wish for another baby soon. But my hands are completely full with just one almost 2-year old boy. Really can't imagine how difficult it is with twins! :)

Have always been wondering, with twins, do you get two times the maternal leave?

  2. Nope, unfortunately, they count it as one birth! Stupid system, I'm more than twice as tired.

  3. but you get to claim baby bonus for #1 and #2 right? meaning you get like..9000$ or something? that should be enough for like, 3 mths supply of diapers or something...

anyways, my girl discovered the joys of thumb/hand/finger/knuckle sucking by Day 2. I'd enter the nursery and hear this loud THUP-THUP-THUP sound and sure enough, there she is. even the nurses were impressed. heee~
