Stranger sibling

Packrat told me that when his brother was born, his parents told him repeatedly that he had to look out for and protect his younger brother.

Being the youngest in the family, I have no frame of reference, but I have indeed enjoyed many years of protection from my brothers.

Now that we have three in the stable, we repeatedly remind the older two of their responsibilities. Jordan, because she is the eldest, to always look out for her two younger brothers. Evan, to protect both his older sister and his baby brother.

Jordan has more affinity towards Muffin. It's not like Evan dislikes Muffin but I suspect Evan sees Muffin as direct competition. That said, he does quite a good job interacting with Muffin, singing to him and informing me that it is time to feed Muffin if Muffin is fussing. But left to his own devices, it really wouldn't occur to Evan to look in on Muffin. He does know, when asked, that he is to protect his baby brother.

When Uncle Plentyfish asked if he could take Muffin home, Evan said no. And added for good measure, "Because he is my di-di."

Jordan, on the other hand, will seek out Muffin to play with him. Because she is often nursing a cough or a runny nose, we have to stop her from smothering him with her kisses as she is inclined to do if given the opportunity. She loves 'carrying' him even though he is getting far too big for her to do so.

Once, someone very jokingly said to Jordan that she was keeping Muffin and Muffin would stay at her house. Jordan did not think it was very funny and looked like she was going to start crying.

She also tells anyone who would listen, "this is my brother."

But as with many on this blog and on Facebook who only know Muffin as Muffin, the twins need to learn the name of their brother.

They know him well as Baby Dylan. But when I asked Evan who Josiah (That's Muffin's middle name) was, Evan thought for a long while before replying "Someone else". When I asked Jordan who Kai Xun (That's Muffin's Chinese name) was, she said the same thing.

We've got our work cut out for us.
