Headphones on the Belly

My weekly pregnancy update announced to me what I already knew, that even in utero, the offspring can actually hear what's going on in the outside world. I've blogged about playing music to the belly before. I don't really do it anymore because I feel like a grand idiot and someone told me it really isn't that great an idea. Anyway, I comfort myself by thinking that I expose them so much to sound and music anyway, what with the radio on in the mornings, the loud music in church that they respond to as well etc.

And what I read was also that the offspring would recognise later on what was played to him/her in utero. This morning however, it occurred to me that there was one piece of music that I listened to and by extension of that, the offspring would have listened to a lot. That thought made me recoil in horror because the piece of music I hear 5 times a week for 10 weeks at a time is the National Anthem. And I really don't want to have to sing that to the offspring as a lullaby because that was the only thing that would calm the screaming infant!

Maybe I should wear a pillow round my belly at assembly to muffle the impact but I'm not even certain that would work. Oh no oh no oh no!

  1. Pinch or poke him whilst it's playing. Then he would learn to hate it. Haha.

  2. LOL, you know what? My three kids went through that too, but it doesn't make that much of a difference because (a) I'm sure your schoolkids barely move their lips during the anthem, so it's not like it's deafening (b) as the bubs grow up, they all end up massacre-ing the anthem anyway and (c) you probably don't sing along, and that tells bub that it's not all that enjoyable... heh.

The ones that really stick in their minds are the ones you hum alot or sing along to with great gusto, and preferably greater enjoyment... and they enjoy it too, 'cus they also experience all the good hormones and chemicals being released when you're happy.

    Phew!

  3. hi there, congrats on your pregnancy.

i had a little scare when i saw the title 'headphones on the belly' as i thought you meant it literally.

the prof of my developmental bio class once told us some kiasu woman did that 24/7 and her baby suffered hearing loss.

i'm not trying to scare you or something yah... just wishing you the best.

  4. On the lighter side, while pregnant, I sang 3 different songs on a fairly regular basis....my daughter is now 15, and those 3 songs can still relax her and if she gives in put her to sleep like it used to when she was a baby, and toddler. :) Many best wishes!

  5. There was a study done where mothers who watched a sitcom every day were able to comfort their baby with that same sitcom when they came out of the womb. It was recommended that putting headphone ON your bely was in fact ok- but no more than for 1 hour 2x a day! 24/7 is extreme- more doesn't mean it's better, although it also doesn't mean that is is harmful in moderation.
