I am thankful for the rain. I hate the heat. It rains every afternoon now. The only problem with the rain is that the twins are stuck in the house. It's made worse when there's thunder because that prevents Evan from sleeping. The boy is plain petrified of it.
Anyway, yesterday was such a day. Rain. No nap. Hyper kids.
My flat is quite big. But when the two are awake and hyper, it feels like a shoe box. And they leave a trail of destruction everywhere they go. I tried to engage them in some 'constructive' fun. I took out the pasta shells I coloured a few weeks ago and endeavoured to get them to sort them according to colour. I am heartened to say that they had no problems sorting them out. But after a while, it was more fun to dump everything on the table. And it got more annoying to nag them to pick up the mess.
I gave up after a while because on top of trying to entertain them, I was battling a cold that left my nose leaking like a faucet and a tickle in it that was worthy of sneezing powder (I wonder if they still sell that stuff). They seemed quite able to entertain themselves so I disappeared for a little bit of a lie down while Muffin fed.
I was woken from my nap by a racket that made it sound like there was a funeral procession in the house. It reminded me that I hadn't 'thanked' my brother-in-law for giving them a music set last birthday that included a drum, a trumpet and a set of cymbals. Once I got over the shock, I realised that the twins seemed to have a musciality that was in tune with one another. Evan could clap in sync with Jordan's cymbals crashing, well most of the time anyway.
The video, however also shows evidence of the other high jinks that they were up to while I was in the room with Muffin. Strewn on the floor was EVERY. SINGLE. SHOE I own. Evan was wearing mismatched ones and Jordan was decked out in her rain boots because it was raining and therefore the rain boots made most perfect sense. It was quite a racket as they clomped round the house. They were also made to keep every single shoe they had thrown out and I am grateful that school has taught them such a virtue.
But not only were they parading in stilettos , they also started to climb the gate. Apparently to see the raindrops (Jordan) and thunder (Evan) and the higher they climbed the better. This was when I thought to myself that I had a couple of monkeys instead of children in the house and the house was actually a monkey house. Or that the kids were hopped up on something.
Eventually, the rain eased out enough that it was no longer hitting the corridor and we could set the twins free on the corridor. They burst out the gate like race horses on speed and started scootering and screaming up and down the corridor. Thankfully no one complained.
The good thing about all this is that both passed out before 8, exhausted by their monkey tricks and not napping and that left Packrat and I a relatively peaceful evening while the very obedient Muffin slept in his bouncer chair till midnight.
