Flight of the grandparents

My children's care-givers have all fled town. Well, not really fled but they've gone on a two week long vacation. I'm not looking forward to the next 2 weeks but better now than when I go back to work I guess.

Each twin has a favourite care-giver. Jordan loves her Ee-Por (Grandaunt) to bits. Where her parents won't give in, Ee-Por will. Evan has Ah-Ma and second to that, his beloved Tita Anie (my mother-in-law's helper). And even though they are not yet 3, they cottoned on quite quickly that Ah Ma and Ee-Por were going away for a while. And by extension of Ah Ma being away, Evan doesn't get to see Tita Anie as much.

So, Sunday was a morose day for them. Jordan cried easily, clung on to me and generally looked like she had "book-in blues". Evan was a little bit cheerier but whenever we asked him where Ah Ma was going, he'd change the subject.

What made me smile though was how he tried to make his sister feel better while she was all blue bear on the way to the airport. He asked us for her pacifier and when I asked him to comfort his sister, he held her hand across their car seats.

And eventually what cheered her up was the airport. More specifically, the car park of the airport. Part of it had been converted into an area where there were electric cars going round a circuit. The girl couldn't take her eyes off it and refused to step into the airport, preferring to stand in the still heat of the car park watching little kids zoom round in little cars and giant inflatable giraffe and kangaroos on buggy wheels going round and round.

Usually we try not to buy into these kiddy rides because it's daylight robbery. This wasn't any different we decided if there was any time to indulge them, it was now.

Round and round they went. Jordan had fun steering although her turning angles are 90 degrees and ends up throwing Mommy off to the side. Evan, as usual, was a bit more cautious but he seemed to be quite chuffed with the ride too. It helped both of them forget whey they were at the airport. $14 made all the difference.

Of course, there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth on the way home. But this time, it was Evan who decided composure was over-rated and for whimps and just let loose all his tears. Jordan was more dignified and just quietly sucked on her pacifier. The next day when we went to the supermarket with an underground car park, she asked if it had big giraffes and kangaroos.

So she obviously had more fun with it. And now that the grandparents/ aunts are out of sight, they are also out of thought. Asking them where Ah Ma or Ee Por is elicits a long pause followed by a very tentative "Japan". When asked what they were doing there, they reply in unison "To see the otters poo".

I seriously don't know what goes on in the heads of my two children.
