Both older children have not come out of their Terrible Twos even though they are almost three. It has evolved and taken on different forms through the year and it feels like once we think we've figured out the secret to dealing with the tantrum/ whining/ anger, it morphs into something else. And like the old saying with diseases where you get well only when you've passed the germs on, when one twin has moved on from the particular tantrum-ic behaviour, the other one is infected by it. However, the course of treatment differs because of their dispositions.
Anyway, Evan has learnt to be naughty. He knows what naughty means and knows that we do not like naughty behaviour. It does not stop him, however from exhibiting naughty behaviour. He makes a concession though. He tells us first. "Evan be naughty boy!"
If we threaten to withhold something from him, we need to follow through on it because he will call our bluff. So there have been times when we have threatened to leave the room because he refuses to sleep or something and he just merrily asks us to leave.
With this and with rapidly improving language skills, the boy has learnt to argue and reason although half the time, it is unsound reasoning.
What sent us into stitches the other day was when he was playing with our helper's photographs and I asked him to return them. In an act of defiance, he flings the whole lot on the ground. I demand he picks them up. At this time, the helper, thinks she is helping, remarks that he shouldn't want the photos because they are of her looking quite ugly. On my next demand that Evan pick up the photos, he looks up and says in a very matter of fact manner "No, I'm not picking the photos up. They are too ugly!"
I chide him for saying that but find it remarkably difficult to keep a straight face.
