I recently read an article about Cheap fun for kids. It goes with my philosophy of not having to pay for them to be entertained at Gymboree and buying them expensive toys that can only be played with one way. Most of what was in it, I recall doing as a child and recall having a lot of fun.
I am also a great believer of how children remember the fun things regardless of cost.
My mom bought the twins some wall decals a while ago. Often, when the twins are given things, I keep them first and give it to them as a treat when they least expect it.
Today, after lunch, I decided it was time for the twins to do a spot of decorating with their decals.
Each of them were given a door and a packet of decals. The decals were picked along gender lines. Thomas for Evan and Dora for Jordan. As far as possible, I try to reduce the potential for conflict by giving them what is exactly the same. This time, while the decals were different, their 'canvas' were similar. Each had a blue door to decorate.
It took a bit of help from both myself and their Grandaunt but it was half an hour of talking about trains, Dora, butterflies and stars and where they belonged. Of course, being 3 year olds, there was no sense of what looked good where but Evan knew that the stars belonged high up on the door because they were up in the sky.
They must have also learnt in school to present things with a flourish because every time a decal went up perfectly, both would chime "Ta-dah!" and expect applause from us.
When they were done, both also seemed to know to take a step back and admire their work. And exclaim most genuinely, "WOOOWWWW! So nice"
Of course, the less enlightened among us would comment about Evan's room being decorated with Dora while Muffin gets the seemingly more masculine Thomas room. (The twins share the room behind Dora's door while Muffin is beside them in the "Thomas" room all by himself.)
But that really wouldn't be the point. The fact that they were so chuffed at having decorated the door was more the point and I really don't think Evan would have minded even if I had given him Precious Moments (also known as Big Headed Dolls) stickers.
But then again, I would have minded. The Big Headed Dolls can join Barney on the Tan blacklist and as far as we can help it will not be allowed into the house.
